COVID-19 DISTANCE LEARNING
To all parents and students of Radio and TV:
Starting on Tuesday, April 14th, I will begin offering content for online learning and expression for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. This offering is in-line with Governor Whitmer's order and the efforts undertaken by WCS (more information is available on the Warren Consolidated website).
My approach will require the use of technology, giving the students a few different options for learning and practicing skills:
-Khan Academy. Students can create a free account on Khan Academy (they may already have an account from another class). Once they have an account, they'll need to sign up for my class using the following code: KJBSKBXS. New lessons and assignments will post every Monday, and provide for a week's worth of work.
-Video and Audio Production. For those who would prefer to be more involved in content creation, there are opportunities to create on both fronts. On the video-side, we are continuing to create our weekly Youtube show. For WPHS- the school's FM radio station- students can record podcasts or production elements. Both of these options are open to all levels of Radio and TV, but they will require access to either a video camera (phone cameras are fine) and/or a decent computer microphone (editing software is also a huge plus). If participating in content creation, please contact me for access to our Discord server.
UPDATED INFO: I'll be using the "collected" function in PS (looks like a checkmark in my gradebook... not sure what you see in Parent Portal). Essentially, the checkmark will show if you completed the assigned work during the week in which it was assigned.
If you don't do the majority of the work- with integrity- no checkmark. What does integrity mean? For example, at one point in Khan Academy, you'll have to write out ideas about your thoughts on story structure. If you don't write OR you write something that shows little effort, that part of the assigned work is considered incomplete. You could almost think of it as a hybrid of attendance-meets-participation.
Remember, there is no "typical" grading, but participation is being monitored. In this regard, there are no "make-ups," per say, because I am monitoring participation as it actually occurs each week.
These are unusual times to be sure. But considering how much you and your family have watched the television or listened to the radio over the last several weeks, it is easy to understand the value of communication and the career paths which these courses can help your students prepare for.
If you have any questions, please contact me via remind or e-mail at [email protected].
Stay safe!

Welcome to Mr. Olstyn's Radio and TV Production Classes
Mr. Olstyn has been working with Warren Consolidated Schools Radio and TV programs since 1999. He holds a certificate from Specs Howard School, a BAS from Siena Heights University, and an MFA in Digital Cinema from National University in California. Mr. Olstyn continues to make award-winning independent films in Michigan.
This site was designed as another tool to connect students and parents back to the broadcast curriculum. Keep in mind that Mr. Olstyn only teaches Career Technical Education, HANDS-ON courses, therefore this site is meant to be a supplement to the class, not a replacement. Students (and their parents) must realize that punctuality and attendance are required for a successful classroom experience; the only grade you will get in any of these classes is the one you earn.
